The Monarch

Danaus plexippus

The Monarch butterfly is the largest and most spectacular of the world's migratory butterflies.
In spring and summer they are seen almost everywhere in North America as far north as the
Hudson Bay. In September the adults start to migrate south to spend the winter in mass roosts
in California and Mexico.

The Monarch butterfly has a wingspan of about 3-4 inches

The Painted Lady

Vanessa cardui

The Painted Lady is one of the world's most successful butterflies.
It can be found widely across most continents except for South America, where it is rare.
Painted Lady butterflies breed in the warmer south but migrate rapidly north in the spring,
sometimes in swarms of many thousands of butterflies.

The Painted Lady butterfly has a wingspan of about 2-21/2 inches
